Nordic Brass Gusum Leads the Transition to a Lead-Free Brass Future

Nordic Brass Gusum AB, one of Europe’s leading brass producers, is at the forefront of the transition to lead-free brass in components that come into contact with drinking water. The shift began in 2024, marking the phase-out of several traditional lead-containing alloys. By 2026, new product certifications will require complete elimination of lead – a decisive regulatory shift placing high demands on manufacturers and suppliers alike.

Since 2006, Nordic Brass Gusum has been conducting research into alternatives to leaded brass alloys. This has led to the development of its proprietary method and product: AquaNordic® – a cost-efficient, dezincification-resistant, and easy-to-machine brass alloy that is entirely lead-free. AquaNordic® meets all regulatory requirements and is 100 percent recyclable.

From a sustainability standpoint, Nordic Brass Gusum is a global leader. The company operates with the world’s lowest CO₂ emissions for brass melting. This means that a Swedish customer can reduce their carbon footprint by up to 20 percent. Moreover, 95 percent of the raw material consists of recycled brass scrap, much of which is sourced from customers’ own waste materials.

With roots deep in Swedish industrial history and brass manufacturing dating back to the mid-1600s, Nordic Brass Gusum is now taking the next major step in materials innovation. Through AquaNordic® and its associated production method, the company is driving the transition toward a more sustainable future.
